Words Hurt

Oscar:  Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

MacIntosh:  You’ll want to tell that to Gabby Giffords if she comes out of her coma.

Oscar:  Did words hurt  that lady?

MacIntosh:  A crazy guy hurt Gabby Gifford.  But we would be crazy to not wonder if the words he heard had some effect.

Oscar:  What kind of words?

MacIntosh:  For all we know the guy in Tucson was just trying to “take his country back” with some “2nd amendment remedies” by eliminating a politician ‘targeted’ by Sarah Palin  because when “ballots don’t work, bullets do”.

Oscar:  Did Sarah say that thing about bullets and ballots?

MacIntosh:  Nope…that was a right-wing shock jock.  Sarah said you shouldn’t retreat…just reload.

Oscar:  Yikes…that sounds like something a soldier would say.

MacIntosh:  Yep…and that’s what soldiers should say.  But it’s not what our political leaders should say.

Oscar:  They should be nice huh, MacIntosh?

MacIntosh:  They should protect us from our enemies not make us enemies of each other.

Oscar:  Cuz divided we fall huh MacIntosh?

MacIntosh:  Exactly.

Mind-blowing article bro. This kind of is just a enormously nicely structured piece of writing, just the awesome info I was looking regarding. I praise you

Make up your mind. He was crazy with no political affiliation until you misconstrue a passage in an article. How convenient and typical…

The guy has some sort of schizoid tendencies which manifests itself in a fantasy world that included some paranoid anti-government conspiracy theories. It appears that the guy fed off of conspiracy and anti-government rhetoric.

GW was a lot of horrible things, but he did not directly cause 9/11. The people who believe that nonsense come from all parts of the political spectrum.

a little attention to the buddhist teachings of ”right speech” and ”right action” would
go a long way towards building acceptance, tolerance and compassion differences and honoring the integrity with which this country was founded. with such an emphasis by the teabaggers on ”christian family values”…i often wonder why the golden rule is not
    given more than lip service?

    • Ziggy and Zoe says:

Nicely put. That was what I was alluding to… right intentions could be added to that thought as well.

Too much deflection about someone else’s behavior when a person should be looking at their own conduct. This relativist nonsense about another party saying something similar before is a cop-out. Listen to Obermann’s comment about taking responsibility for one’s action. He admits his unintentional but nevertheless harmful speech which he recognizes, regrets, apologizes and will try to take steps to remedy. Why cannot other public figures do the same thing when they have overtly stepped over the line with violent imagery and rhetoric?

Absolutely on the mark… the Noble Eightfold Path speaks to this dynamic.

Your Reader Digest condensed version of the Bible is a hilarious take on the actual collection of writings.

The Golden Rule has existed in many different areas and religions/philosophies at various times during history. The Daoists, Hindus and many others had the same thing written down long before any Jew. Take off your Judeo-Christian blinders.

Tom Delay gets 3 years today…
Its a absolute shame we can’t just build a fence around Congress, it would same a lot of time and money… Yup corral the whole lot…

  4. Uncle Stever says:

The guy that did this is FREAKING Nuts…. Going off about Mind Control….

It has nothing to do with talk radio or TV.

The Sheriff should be fired for not providing enough security at a political event.

  5. Uncle Stever says:

Last of civility and decorum died with Reagan and Tip O’Neil…

Bullseyes and targets had been used by both parties numerous occasions start searching Google its all over the place. Recently over the few years both Republican and Democrat offices had been targeted and even shot.

    Speaking of politics and guns…..

Whats really required is a strong citizenry engaged in politics which will not tolerate either party engaging in such gutter tactics..

So Hillary thinks the acts of a deranged individual are on par with the coordinated acts of global terror such as Al Qaeda? In the words of a Great American Bugs Bunny “What A Maroon”!!!!

The random acts of a deranged individual are far less of a threat than the exploitation of this horrific incident by our elected officials and those in the media for political gutter fodder in partisan attacks is despicable, hateful, bigoted and Un-American..

These poor victims aren’t even buried yet, and not one shred common decency by these partisan pundits. I dunno I’m pretty disgusted at the whole lot.

  6. Ziggy and Zoe says:

    Intentions and recklessness…

I doubt there was any purposeful intent by some of the blow-hards except wanting to energize their base with their idiotic vitriol.

Unfortunately they are not held responsible for their words even though they were not intended to physically harm anyone. It is disingenuous of conservative/Tea Party/Republicans to write and speak in such a way but not accept the responsibility of their actions. They talk a big game about taking responsibility for actions until they are called on their actions.

Sure the shooter(s) are primarily responsible for their actions, but it is easy to see how unhinged individuals can be pushed over the edge by violent imagery and rhetoric.

Nice post btw… (have you guys ever thought about promoting this blog via Facebook and/or Twitter?)

    • Uncle Stever says:

Why the hell do that its one of the few places of civility left which those of differing views can merely engage in political and Geo-political..

    • dwelchnz says:

Thanks ZZ. No I haven’t done anything specific to promote the site other than post links in the comments of posts on other sites if the context is appropriate. I do post on my facebook (we should be friends) and people repost the ones they like. I do get new readers that way. What should I be doing to promote more aggressively?

      • Ziggy and Zoe says:

I would suggest setting up a Facebook page directly for MacIntosh and Oscar. If you get over 25 people to like the page then you can set it up like a Fan Page with an unique URL. This unique URL will be indexed by Google and other search engines which could give you a potentially larger audience. After you set up the Page on Facebook ask your existing audience who has a Facebook account to give your new page a Like.

As for Twitter, there should be some way to set up a Twitter feed from the new Facebook page or this blog to give snippets of your work to bring the audience to your blog or Facebook account.

        Good luck!

      Responsible for ones actions?

      Physician heal thy self.

    • Uncle Stever says:

Turns out the nut job never listened to the news, talk radio and wasn’t political
      at all………

You call out the Republicans what of the Democrats and their supporters are they to be held responsible for their rhetoric? I see nothing from you in this…?

I don’t really expect much the way of civility, its not in our nations history going back to Lincoln / Douglas debates or even Jefferson / Hamilton.

Larger question in all of this political mental masturbation is being ignored..

Mental health and the warning signs…. This is awful similar to VW incident in that the individual was toss out from school from a number of incidents related to his mental instability, and its going to be interesting to see whats contained in the police reports regarding his priors which had just been released today..

Interesting it takes years to fully diagnose these mental illnesses, yet 1% percent of the population is estimated to be paranoid schizophrenic..
Triggers of warning signs had already gone off with this guy in college but I see the disconnect that such incidents aren’t reported outside the education institution to other authorities.

Do we go back to institutional the mentally as in the past?

Seems we have done a far better job with veterans who suffer from mental illness such as PTSD and treat them as wounded and not stigma of being weak today.. These conditions can be detected by cause and effect

But what of the other mental illnesses in our broader society which aren’t so identifiable or if they are are ignored because how we view a agency or institutions role..

I this individual was such a threat that college removed him from their environment, the US Army rejected him, he has priors with the law. It seems someone within the Justice system should have ordered observation in a mental ward for evaluation…

I’m not familiar with Az statutes in this regard I suppose this is something that state and others will be assessing.
